BIBLE PROGRAM

A different Bible story forms the basis for each week’s Bible Program. This promotes Christian values in the lives of children. An integral part of our Bible Program is the opportunity for our students to serve others whether this is within the school (eg. buddy program) or in the community (eg. visiting local retirement villages).

VALUES EDUCATION

Each week the Primary school focuses on a different character value (eg. respect, friendship, thankfulness, etc.), through discussions, role plays and stories. One child from each classroom is recognized for displaying this value and receives an honour badge which is worn through the following week.

COMPUTING

Access to IT technology in a well resourced computer classroom. New computers are purchased every three years to keep up with current trends in IT. All students have regular computing classes. By Year 6 students will have received instruction in word processing, Powerpoint, spreadsheets, graphics and keyboarding. These skills are a foundation for continuing computing studies at Secondary School.

LIBRARY

All Primary students have a weekly lesson in the Library where they are taught research skills and given the opportunity to borrow books. One of the highlights on the Library calendar is the annual Scholastic Book Fair.

CHAPEL

Each Friday students participate in the Chapel program. The first half of the Chapel program focuses on worship where children sing, pray and listen to a guest speaker from either a church based group or from our local community. The second half of the program is set aside to affirm students through awards such as the Principal’s Award, the weekly Honour Awards and House Points Awards.

PERFORMING ARTS

Students from K-6 are taught basic concepts of music. Music periods are held weekly, and last for 30 minutes. Infant and primary choirs meet each week during school time. In Grades 3 & 5 all students are given the opportunity to learn either a brass or woodwind instrument. They receive group lessons during the course of one year, and then can choose to continue with private lessons the following year. Students in Years 3 to 6 have an opportunity to participate in a Performance option of their choice for 30 minute each week, with a view to presenting a public performance. Options currently available are: Primary choir, recorders, bell choir, tuned percussion, drama, spoken performance.

A range of private music lessons is available during or after school by qualified music teachers. Brass, flute, piano, guitar and voice lessons are currently available.

LOTE (Languages Other Than English)

All students from Grades 1-6 have exposure to the Thai language. This provides a cultural experience giving a broader view of their world, whereby students develop an understanding of, and an appreciation for, the country and the customs of the people, together with basic vocabulary and the confidence to use it in context with others. This part of our curriculum provides valuable enrichment to students, with many links to other subjects.

SPORT

Border Christian Colleges runs an extensive sports program. In term one all students participate in swimming lessons through AUSTWIM qualified instructors and in term three students attend the local gymnastics school where they are taught by qualified gymnastics trainers. For the remainder of the year a variety of sports activities is offered including; cricket, soccer, athletics, netball, basketball, AFL and tennis. Students also have the opportunity to compete at the Border Independent Primary School Sports Association (BIPSSA) in athletics, swimming and cross country. If successful at this level, students are given the opportunity to compete at the Combined Independent Schools Sports Association (CIS).

EXCURSIONS

Primary students participate in excursions relevant to the curriculum at the teacher’s discretion during the year. Excursions for pleasure are School Picnic day during the first week of school and an end of year outing at the conclusion of Term 4. Our Year 5&6 students enjoy a major excursion every two years to a state capital, in the past this has been Sydney, Canberra or Melbourne.

YOUNG LEADERS PROGRAM

In March each year our school captains, house captains and senior SRC members travel to Melbourne for the National Young Leaders Conference where they have the opportunity to listen to motivational speakers who encourage them to develop leadership skills.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP

Primary School Captains are nominated by BCC students and staff, and the announcement of new student leaders is made during the Awards Night Ceremony at the end of the school year. The Captains lead out on Monday morning school assembly and represent the College at official occasions. Other positions of leadership include Student Representative Council (SRC) and House Captains.

The Primary School Student Representative Council (SRC) is made up of a boy and girl representative from of Grades 4, 5 & 6 together with the school captains. The SRC gives students an opportunity to develop their leadership skills as they help to organise fundraising activities for both the school and the community. The SRC is also a forum where students can have a voice regarding things that concern their school life.
