As many of you are no doubt aware, part of the government’s education reform initiatives involve plans to publish the results of national Literacy and Numeracy testing. This leads to obvious concerns about schools being ranked and compared to one another on the basis of their scores in these compulsory tests, done in years 3, 5, 7 and 9. I thought that it would be interesting, considering Border Christian College places a high priority on holistic education, to see what you, our parents and community, think about proposed publishing of national Performance Results in a ‘League Table’.
In a recent study reported in the Sydney Morning Herald, almost three-quarters of people said school performance data to be made available on a national website this year should not be reproduced in any form without government permission. A spokesman for the Education Minister, Julia Gillard, said parents want more information ''about how their children are doing and how schools perform''.
What do you think? Parents are invited to participate in the online poll. Results to be published in next fortnight's Newsletter.
